How does Thumbtack work?
Thumbtack is a popular site for finding contractors, businesses, and more. While, it is free to create an account; it is not free to use as a business. Many people often go through the process of signing up before they fully understand how Thumbtack Pro works. We are hoping to save you time and money by explaining how Thumbtack works for business.
Thumbtack works by charging businesses per lead. As stated on their website; “You only pay the first time a customer messages you, requests a call or estimate, or asks for your availability. “
Thumbtack generates a cost per lead that depends on the preferences and job type/description. For example, a painting gig might cost $8 per lead and a marketing gig might cost $10 per lead.
The first step is to set your service location.
This is the locations where your leads will come from. This will also affect how much you pay per lead. Take New York, NY vs Watertown, NY. When we compared leads the cost for a marketing lead had almost a $10 difference. This is because of demand and competition on the platform.
The next step is to set your weekly budget.
In order to see how much you will pay per lead you have to use the budget setting tool. Thumbtack does state that the estimated leads will vary each week as the cost per lead can fluctuate.
You can also bid on and promote different services.
By clicking on Services in the top corner, you can add services to your Thumbtack Pro account and edit how much a week you are willing to bid on each service. You can also promote your services and get at the top of the results.
Bidding on Jobs directly.
In your dashboard is you click on Jobs at the top right corner, you will see a list of jobs relevant to your services. In this list, you can see how many pros responded and when the job was posted. In order to bid on a specific job on Thumbtack; click on View Details next to the job listed.
Once you click on the job, you will be brought to a page that shows you more details. You will also be able to send a message and quoted price from this page. Before you send a message you should check and see how much this lead will cost you. To find out the price of a Thumbtack job listing click on Learn more on the job page.
When you click on Learn more, the cost of the leads reply will come up. If a customer doesn’t respond on Thumbtack or responds with “no thanks” you will NOT pay. If the customer responds, then you will pay the price. Here the cost of a response from this lead would be $63. Remember that you will pay this price even if in the end the lead doesn’t go with you. So bid carefully.
Thumbtack has mixed reviews from many people across the web. It is great as it does not take a percentage and only charges per positive lead response. However many people report having many bad leads that simply cost them a lot of money and no projects to show. This could be due to many different factors including a poor profile or bidding on the wrong type of projects. In any case, whenever branching out onto a platform like Thumbtack, we always suggest that you do your best to create a very attractive profile and then test the waters with a low budget.
